Often people have a clear idea of what kind of internet business they want to start. But how well do you know your market?

But along with doing niche research and keyword research it can be very rewarding to research what problems your visitors have and what products they are looking for.

Test by Selling Other People's Products

It can be sensible to start by selling other people's products - acting as an affiliate, to test the market and get to really understand what the market wants and start to build a list.

You can test a market using products from online stores, whether you feature hard product items like books or virtual products like downloads.

Testing other people's products gives you more ideas of how to develop your own products - what kind of format would be popular, what price points will your market bear, what subject matter meets people's biggest needs.

How To Test Products

You can set up a website very quickly with a widget or banner with a selection of relevant products, or you could put up a one information product. You can measure the click throughs and sales and compare the figures to the number of visitors.

As a general rule if you can get to 200 visitors a day you should make one sale per day if it is a commercial market. So when you do your keyword research make sure that you would get at least this amount of traffic if you could get your site to number one, or say number three in a bigger market.

If you go for a smaller niche market it may still be worth going forward - but you are likely to only make a few sales each month

You can test different affiliate products to see which perform best, your affiliate records will show you what actual books and other products people buy to give you a good steer on the products that would be most successful.

I find this a really good indicator of the issues people have - and also steers me to topics and products I hadn't thought of.

Analyse Your Visitor Figures

Another indicator of popular topics is which posts on your blog that people view most. Track the statistics you get from the analytics on your site - you can learn a lot.

For example, my analytics tell me there is one article on one of my sites that consistently gets the most traffic - so that is an obvious candidate for a product. And there doesn't seem to be another competitor product out there - even better!
