This teaches people that you expect to be paid for your more detailed or higher level products and teaches them to pay for it. You are then putting your listbuilding efforts into your target market - people you want to build a relationship with and are willing to pay.

This is a great way to build your list without advertising. What you do is create an eBook which you then freely distribute, making sure that your details are all over it, leading to your website or squeeze page, so people click through and find out more.
Or you can give the book to other website owners in your niche so they have reprint rights to the product and can sell it while making 100% commission. It's up to you. With the reprint right route people may be more likely to read and value a book they have paid for. But if you can produce a really good report, free distribution can get you loads of subscribers - and customers.
Listbuilding Tip 5 - Find Experts And Do Interviews
In many niches, audio interviews can be a great give-away and these days are easy to via Skype and MP3s. The principle is that you find an expert and interview them about their book, or their views on a topic or some instructions on how to do something. The you distribute as before - with your details in the audio.
Of course you can put podcasts up on iTunes as well. Many expert authors are happy to be interviewed - research them via Amazon, or one of the article directories - Ezine.com is a good place to start.
Just go to ezinearticles.com, find the category related to the niche you are in and research the writers of the top rated articles. Some may have their own websites so contact them via their website contact details.
Tell them you want to interview them because you've read an article they've written, tell them what you thought was good about it and how it is relevant to your readers they would benefit from the expert's knowledge.
Most authors will not charge you if you are in a non-marketing niche - they will get a thrill out of being interviewed. Once you have the interviews, let the publishers you contacted in from tip 3 know that you have a great set of mp3′s they can offer for free to their lists. Setup a squeeze page on your website with the download link to the mp3′s and an optin form.
You'll find people will sign up before and after they listen to your interviews.
You can distribute via YouTube as well. Once you have some audio, you can add some slides or other simple visuals and you have a video you can put up - which of course has links back to you website.
You can do the same thing with a report - you can read out sections, add some slides and link back to your website for wider distribution. This way you get links and visitors - and your listbuilding will be much more effective.
